I first met Matt and his beautiful family 15 years ago here at ECU and it was always fun to chat with him at Dept. of Geography gatherings. I am so sad to hear about Matt's passing and I am so sorry for your loss Viva and Fiona. Love, Rosana

I met Matt in high school. I thought he was the coolest skater guy! He introduced me to Black Flag and got me into punk rock. Such a wonderful friend and unique kind human being. He will be so missed. I am so sorry for your loss.

Sad to learn of Matt's passing and my sincere condolences to Viva, family and friends. I knew Matt as friendly visitor to most ECU Geography socials and a leader and colleague in the library. I didn't know he was a fan of Liverpool FC until reading here. Their motto and theme song is "You'll never walk alone," which I think resonates.

I first met Matt downstairs in the Lewisburg house where he, Ben, Jet Crandall and I (as well as some others I am a little hazy on) invented the rousing game of Bag Ball. Later I became better friends with him during French class as well as various advanced classes at GEHS. He was brilliant and funny and an absolute joy to be around. The last time I was able to enjoy his company was during a camping trip a few years back in WV. It was wonderful to experience his infectious laughter and regale life's anecdotes together in person. His time among us was too short. Humanity has been deprived of a wonderful man.

I worked with Matt for a decade or more at the Joyner Library, East Carolina University. His enthusiasm, fun-loving nature, integrity and professionalism were endearing. He was a valued colleague to me and many others. I enjoyed visiting him in the Special Collections and Archives at Sewanee, where he continued his commitment to exposing undergraduates to primary sources. Matt made a difference in the lives of many and will be missed.

Matt was such a genuinely kind man and a joy to talk to! John enjoyed talking to him about punk rock. He always found a way to connect with people. Parker thought he was the coolest for being a gamer. Our love to Viva, Fiona, and the rest of his loving circle of family who are aching in his absence.

Matt was the kind of person you loved seeing in a room. Here was a welcome face, a connection. The descriptions and phrases that I think of when I remember Matt are kindness; trivia skills and missteps (purple candles, c'mon); sharing a beer, questionable and eclectic taste in music; intelligence; archivist; and acerbic sense of humor--just a beautiful person. Many people will always miss him and I'm lucky to be among them--I am better for having known Matt.

I had only ever met Matt via an online D&D game we played together for a number of years. He was always upbeat, positive and all around a great guy who seemed to care about everyone even though we were just "online" friends. He was a good friend. My deep condolences to his family for the loss. He will be remembered by a group of random online folks as someone they knew, liked and are very saddened to have gone.
