Obituary of Douglas Eugene Wright, Sr.

Douglas Eugene Wright, Sr., 76, of Monteagle, TN. Passed away November 22, 2017 at Southern Regional Health Hospital in Sewanee, TN.

Douglas was born on March 30, 1942 in Laurinburg, NC to Mark and Irene Wright. He graduated from Laurinburg High School in 1960. He was formerly married to Linda Sue Bowman of Waverly, TN.

Douglas is survived by two children, Douglas, Jr. and his son, Josh of Syrma, TN. Cindy and her daughter Autumn, also of Syrma, TN. Three sisters, Joyce Tucker of Clover, VA, Gloria Gibson of Fayetteville, NC and Linda Register of Raleigh, NC. Two brothers and their wives, Ronnie and Betty Rose Wright of Raleigh, NC. also Randy and Chris Wright of Gatlinburg, TN. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Douglas joined the Army in 1961. Serving honorably, he was a member of the elite 101st Airborne Division. He was also a distinguished Army Ranger. One highlight from his airborne days was being chosen to make a personal jump, just he and the general, with General William Westmoreland, who commanded the Army during the Vietnam War.

After the military Douglas settled in the Nashville, TN area where he was a successful realtor for a number of years. After this he worked for the state of Tennessee some ten years. Retiring from this position, he moved to the Smoky Mountain area which he had fallen in love with as a young man.

Douglas was a fan of Elvis music, John Wayne movies and Westerns. An outstanding athlete as a young man, the Army once timed him in the mile at four minutes and one second. While playing high school baseball, he once hit a ball off the left field fence so hard that the shortstop played the ball, not the outfielders.

Funeral services for Mr. Wright will be held at his final resting place, the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville, TN, Friday, December 1, 2017, 2:00 P.M.
