Obituary of Eddie Derryberry
Please share a memory of Eddie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Eddie Derryberry passed away on February 3 at his home after a series of illnesses over recent years. Born August 3, 1938 in Lewisburg, Tennessee, Eddie was the only child of the late George Freddie Derryberry and Elizabeth Andrews Derryberry. He was the grandson of the late Bennie and Mamie Derryberry and John and Josie May Andrews.
Eddie graduated from Marshall County High School and served in the United States Navy. He was married to the former Dorothy Jean Harrison.
He was the third generation owner of Lewisburg Plumbing and Heating. He built and operated the first car wash in Lewisburg and owned and operated Ed's Hardware. As an accomplished pilot, Eddie enjoyed flying the family to many outings. A love politics called him to be appointed to the unexpired term of a sitting mayor of Lewisburg. He completed that term and was elected to two additional terms before becoming city manager. His ability to work across party lines was evident as he was a Republican serving in a largely Democratic region of the state. He also served as president of the Tennessee Municipal League and was a member of the National League of Cities.
Eddie and Jean retired to Monteagle Mountain 17 years ago where they enjoyed a love of their new community, new friends and a way of life that both enjoyed to its' fullest. Continuing his love of public service, Eddie was appointed to serve on the town of Monteagle's Planning Commission as well as the Marion County Board of Equalization. He was a Master Mason of the Scottish Rite and a member of the Al Menah Shrine Temple of Nashville. He enjoyed serving several years as a member of the organization's motor corps.
Eddie was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in South Pittsburg, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents. In addition to his wife Jean, Eddie is survived by his son Andrew (Andy), and wife Robin Derryberry of Chattanooga; daughter Scarlet Massey, and grandchildren, Tristan Alexander and Summer Olivia Massey of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He is also survived by his shadow and best dog ever, Chicky.
The family will receive friends and family at Cumberland Funeral Home located on Monteagle on Friday, February 5 from 5 - 8:30 p.m. (CST). A graveside service will be held on Saturday at the Lone Oak Cemetery in Lewisburg, Tennessee at 2:00 p.m. (CST).
The family would like to thank numerous friends and neighbors who've done so much to support Eddie and Jean during this difficult time. From the guys at Hardee's and their morning gatherings to the many friends who've offered support and encouragement during his last days, Eddie was truly blessed to have the love and friendship of so many.
