Obituary of Dorothy "Dottie" Sanders

Dorothy Juanita Sanders, age 79, passed away May 9, 2015, at home in Monteagle, TN. Born August 31, 1935, to the late Herman and Wrenn Sanders, she was a 1953 graduate of Grundy County High School and continued her education at the University of Tennessee, graduating with a degree in Interior Design in 1957. She began her career in Memphis, working for Goldsmith's Department Store, before starting her own business, Dottie Sanders Interior Designs. Dottie specialized in historical restoration and was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and the Tennessee Society of Interior Designers, serving as president for the TSID. In addition, she was a member of the Germantown Garden Club. During her years in Memphis, she was an active member of the Germantown Church of Christ. Dottie was passionate about her profession and always recognized the wonderful education she received at the University of Tennessee as an important part of her success. She was active in the UT Alumni Association and served on the board of the School of Architecture and Design at the university. She endowed the Dottie Sanders School of Architecture and Design Scholarship. Her survivors include her brother Jim (Kay) Sanders; her niece, Amanda (Eddie) Phillips; her nephew, Jay (Teri) Sanders; great-nephews J.T. and Hunter Phillips; great-nieces Kate Sanders and Hannah Phillips; and numerous cousins and longtime friends. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 12, in the Cumberland Funeral Home Chapel. Paul Tittle and Buford Newsome of Monteagle Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will followed at the Monteagle Cemetery. Pallbearers included Eddie Phillips, Hunter Phillips, J.T. Phillips, Carter Underhill, Matt Underhill, Kyle Underhill, and Kenji Kato. Honorary pallbearers included Jody Hargis, John W. Greeter, Dr. Joe Johnson, Dr. Fred Hatch, Dr. Phil George, Jerry Don Thomas, Jim Myers, Doug Haynes, Wayne Dowdle, Bobby Wiggins, Landon Gilliam, James David Oliver, Dr. Ken Malhoit, Harry Parmley, Vaughn Coppinger, Tim Ramsey, and Roland Gerhart.
