Mr. John W. Hankins age 87 of Decherd, Tennessee passed away Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Life Care Center in Tullahoma. He was a native of Sewanee, a son of the late Horace B. and Katie Fay Anderson Hankins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; two brothers, Horace, Jr. and Richard; grandson, Jason Lappin. John retired from American General Life Insurance Company after a long career of loyal service, he was a member of the Winchester Cumberland Presbyterian Church, was an avid Sports fan, rarely missing a game that his children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren played. John loved the Tennessee Vols, especially Lady Vols Basketball. He was a proud American, serving his country in World War II in the Army and was a 60 year member of the American Legion. He is survived by his daughters, Cindy (Galon) Sherrill, Decherd, Jan Lappin; grandchildren, Beth Burton, Allison (Jason) Fraker, Matt Lappin, Clay Sherrill, and Becca Yates; great-grandchildren, Christopher Harper, Aleigh Sherrill, Cullie Anne Fraker, Aydan Yates, Reagan Sherrill, Ava Rose Yates; great-great-granddaughter, Zoey Harper; sister-in-law, Prue Hankins; nieces, Jenny Kiser, Amy Urbaniaki, Connie Boatman. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Michael Clark officiating. Burial will be in Eastern Star Cemetery with full military honors provided by Sequatchie Valley Veteran's Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday evening from5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Winchester and Tuesday 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
