Obituary of Mary Livingstone Cushman

Mary Susan Livingstone Cushman, 81, died Thursday, November 21, 2013, at her home in Sewanee, Tennessee. The funeral was held Monday, November 25 at All Saints' Chapel and Mary Sue was buried simultaneously beside her husband of 58 years, Joe, who died that morning. The services were held at 1:00. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Mary Sue Cushman Scholarship fund at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Dean Cushman was born in Grosse Pointe, MI. in 1932. She attended Wellesley College and received her Masters from Harvard. She moved to Sewanee with her family in 1968 and served as principal of Sewanee Elementary School in the early 1970s. In 1972, Mary Sue became the Dean of Women at the University of the South as served at that position until 1992. She then became the first Dean of Students at the university and remained at that position until 1994. She retired in 1994 and enjoyed traveling with her husband for the next few years. Dean Cushman is survived by her sons David Cushman (Quynh) of New Orleans, La. and Clay Cushman (Cheryl) of Fayetteville, Ga; and her grandson Mead Claybrooke Cushman
