Obituary of Joseph Cushman

Joseph David Cushman, 88, died Monday, November 25, 2013 at his home in Sewanee. The funeral was held the same day so Joseph could be buried with his wife of 58 years, Mary Sue, in Sewanee's University Cemetery. The funeral was held for both at 1:00 in All Saints Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Joseph Cushman History Scholarship at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Dr. Cushman was a graduate of the University of the South in History. He received his PhD from Florida State University and served as a member of FSU's faculty for 10 years. Joe was a veteran of World War II and received two purple hearts and a good conduct medal while fighting in Europe. He returned to Sewanee with his family in 1968 and served on the History Department faculty until his retirement in 1993. He continued to be active with the university and in the community helping maintain Abbot's Alley for several years. Dr. Cushman is survived by his sons David Cushman (Quynh) of New Orleans, La. and Clay Cushman (Cheryl) of Fayetteville, Ga; and his grandson Mead Claybrooke Cushman.
