Barbara Nell Boston, 74, died on Thursday, October 17 in her home surrounded by her family after a long and valiant battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Centrahoma, Oklahoma, during the dustbowl; Barbara worked to distinguish herself as an honor student and a hard worker. Despite living through hard times, she had fond memories of being a tough Oklahoma girl. She was competitive and tried to be the best at whatever she attempted, whether it be playing the piano, school work, or picking the most cotton in the field. Barbara was a Registered Nurse, graduating number one in her class of 400 from Oakland Community College in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She also graduated with honors from Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resource Management. For over 23 years Barbara worked in the state of Alabama in the medical field holding such positions as Director of Nursing in a nursing home, Hospital Supervisor, county public health nurse, and Supervisor for private duty nursing for the state of Alabama Medicaid Agency. Miss Barbara, as she was affectionately known, cared deeply for her God, her family, and her church. soft-spoken and loving, she sought to expand her family and friends, becoming fast friends with all who knew her. It was her wish that all these people knew how honored she was to be included in their lives. She was so grateful to be a member of her ever-growing mountain family. She was a member of the Cumberland Heights Seventh Day Adventist Church for the past fifteen years. During her lifetime she served her church as pianist, Sabbath school superintendent, Sabbath school secretary, librarian, deaconess, and treasurer. She was preceded in death by her parents Mike and Mamie Mowdy, her brother Mike Mowdy, Jr., and her sister Mamie Dean Mowdy. Barbara is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bill Boston; sons Ronald (Pat) Boston (Tracy City); Steven Boston of Montgomery, Ala; sister Janet (John) Hendrix, Red Level; niece Joyce Hall of Alabama; nephew Dr. Michael Mowdy of Texas; sister-in-law Dottie Mowdy of Moore, Oklahoma; and niece vicki (Rick) Moore, also of Moore, Oklahoma. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 at Bonny Oaks Cemetery with Pastors Jeff Walper and Clyde Leeds officiating.
