Mr. L.H. Burnett age 94, of Pelham, Tennessee went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro, TN. Mr. Burnett spent his life serving. First and foremost he was committed to serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Next came his family. He was married to Gladys Crabtree for 68 years. They raised three sons and served as roll models to all young citizens in Grundy County. L.H. served his country in WWII as a member of the Army Air Corps. He served in numerous civic organizations and was chairman of the Grundy County School Board. He was also chairman of the Grundy County Commission. Next to the service to his Lord and Savior and Family, L.H. was most proud of his service to the Grundy County Soil Conservation. He served this organization for more than 50 years and was the chairman of the organization until his death. It was through this organization that L.H. became involved in reclaiming the land left scarred by strip mining. L.H. led an effort that succeeded in requiring that land be reclaimed not only in Grundy County but also all of Tennessee and other states where strip mining had occurred. This effort required his testimony before both the United States senate and house of representatives. His life of service as a rural letter carrier, farmer, father, civic leader and Christian should serve as a model for all generations.Mr. Burnett was born to the Late John, and Mary Jane Burnett March 13, 1919 in Pelham, TN. Mr. Burnett was a member of Decherd First Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Burnett was preceded in death by his loving wife Mrs. Gladys Burnett, two sisters Madelene Hamby, and Lenora Payne; two brothers Jim Burnett, and Wilson Burnett. Survivors include his sons and their wives Edwin (Carol) Burnett of Murfreesboro, TN, Byron (Deborah) Burnett of Manchester, TN and Carlton (Angie) Burnett of Pelham, TN ; three grandchildren Mandy, Nathan, and Michael; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 7, 2013 in the chapel of Cumberland Funeral Home. Minister Bob Vickers, and Reverend Riley Anderson will officiate.
