Obituary of Manuel Knott

Mr. Manuel Melvin Knott age 90 of the Subligna Community of Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, March 31, 2013, in Oak View Health & Rehab in Summerville. He was born in Sewanee on May 23, 1922 a son of the late Oscar Luck Knott and Carrie Long Knott also preceding him in death was his wife, Savannah Smith Knott; brother, Archie Ray Knott; sister, Sue Butner; father and mother in-law, Edd and Fannie Smith; son in law, Johnny E. Shirley; great-grandson, Dawson Tyler Knott.
Mr. Knott was a U.S. Marine veteran and had served during World War II, he was a member of the American Legion, Sewanee Lodge #405 F. & A.M., a member of Boy's Town, an active worker for the Alzheimer's Search for a Cure Committee.
Manuel attended St. Andrews School for Boys and was an Episcopalian with membership at St. James Episcopal Church in Midway. During his working life he was a merchant for many years in Midway and had retired from Tennessee Consolidate Coal Company where he worked in land management.
Survivors include his children, Jackie (Taylor) Bowman, Julia Ann "Judy" Knott, Edward L. "Bud" (Delores); grandchildren, Edward "Lucky" (Mary) Knott, Maurice (Linda) Bowman, Stacey (Joey) Carlton,Melanie Cooksey, and Carrie Bowman; great-grandchildren, Jessica Jones, Skylar, Alexis, and Aubrey Martin, Savannah and Christian Carlton, Keesha Hulley, Sam Brinkley; a special brother-in-law, Robert "Gube" Caldwell; many special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday in the chapel of Cumberland Funeral Home with Minister Buddy Van Dyke officiating. Burial will be in Eastern Star Cemetery in Sewanee. Pallbearers will be Maurice Bowman, Jerry Smith, Jimmy Knott, Jackie Ladd, John David Ladd and David Sampley; honorary pallbearers are Robert "Gube" Caldwell, James Barry, Phillip Meeks, Ross Barry, Oscar Knott, Alan Knott, Robert Short, Joey Carlton, Taylor Bowman and members of Sewanee Lodge #405 F. & A.M. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 until 9 p.m. with Masonic rites at 7:00 P.M. On line condolences may be made at www.cumberlandfuneralhome.net.
