Obituary of Betty King
Please share a memory of Betty to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Betty Camp King of Monteagle, wife of Glenn King for 61 of her 82 years. Her life started in Gwinnett County Georgia and upbringing was in Stone Mountain where she was a star on the high school basketball team and had the lead in their school theatrical production. Her adult life started as owner and operator of Betty's Beauty Salon. After her marriage they relocated to several cities in the Mid-West and eventually to AEDC in Tullahoma. Betty was an avid member of the Tennessee Ornithological Society and Girl Scouts of America. She especially enjoyed serving as Nature Consultant for the Middle Tennessee Girl Scout Council leading nature hikes and giving slide presentations about birds and wildlife to schools and civic organizations. She also served as an unpaid advisor to state park rangers and naturalists. Daughters Kim and Glenda were raised in Tullahoma, and a move to Monteagle for Betty and Glenn followed after their daughters left home for college and eventual marriages. Betty was very active in several organizations, and an ardent booster of this mountain. She served on the Grundy County Election Commission and Foster Care Review Board, represented Grundy County in Mental Health matters in the Joe Johnson Mental Health Organization, and served 20 years as a member of the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute Board of Trustees. She was a dedicated member of the Republican Party and worked at county, state and Federal levels including time with Senator Bill Brock and Congressman Zack Wamp. She was elected and served three terms to represent this area's State Senatorial District as a member of the state GOP Executive Committee. Several years were spent as a Docent with the National Medal of Honor Museum of Military History in Chattanooga and managing the museum gift shop. A favorite activity was helping Glenn support his WW 2 Army Air Force Association Reunions. They procured a plaque to install in the Air Force Museum Memorial Garden in Dayton, Ohio and co-hosted a dedication ceremony. Many became acquainted with Betty when she was Public Relations Representative for Cliff Tops Real Estate Development, secretary of the Monteagle Mountain Development Group and manager of the Smokehouse and Pottery and Crafts Gift Shops. For Betty though her most pleasurable and favorite activity was playing grandma to grandchildren, Lillian and little Glenn. Her last years were spent in an unsuccessful battle against a rare horrible disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) which is similar to Parkinson's but untreatable.
Survivors include her husband, Percy Glenn King; daughters, Kim King (Allen) Stout, Franklin, TN and Glenda King (Charlie) Beals of Mt. Juliet, TN; sister-in-law, Carla Camp of Atlanta; grandchildren, Glenn and Lillian; nephew, Blaine; nieces, Kelly and Sherry.
