Obituary of Betty Jean Layne

Mrs. Betty Jean Layne, age 89, of Tracy City, Tennessee, passed away at Alive Hospice Center in Murfreesboro, TN, January 23, 2023, surrounded by her children. She was born June 1, 1933, to Rev. Carl and Martha Haynes, who preceded her in death as well as her husband of 71 years, Alfred Layne; sons, Darrell and Johnny Layne; daughter, Darla Layne Christian; grandson, Jeramie Layne; brothers, Vernon, Howard, and Paul Haynes; and sisters, Dorothy Brown, Alma Stiefel, Willie Sue Gray, and Madeline Haynes. Mrs. Layne is survived by her children, Ricky (Stephanie) Layne and Gwen (Don) Smith; sister, Portia (Burney) McDowell; nine grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; “Honorary Son” John Payne; and special friend, Elaine Meeks. She was a lifetime member of Myers Hill Congregational Church and was also a member of The Haynes Trio for more than 70 years. During their ministry they sang at hundreds of funerals and traveled nationwide spreading God’s word. The Funeral Service will be Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Myers Hill Congregational Methodist Church at 2:00 PM with Bro. Dennis Rollins and Bro. Matthew Meeks officiating. Burial will follow at Plainview Cemetery. A visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2023, from 5-9 PM at Myers Hill Congregational Methodist Church.
