The Reverend Ramona Rose-Crossley died unexpectedly at her home in Sewanee on Wednesday, January 11th. Mother Ramona was 87. Ramona was born in Philadelphia and attended public schools including Philadelphia High School for Girls. She graduated with a BA in anthropology from Barnard and a Master's in Social Work from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. For several years, she offered therapy to abused children from broken homes. Then in the early 60’s, she and her then husband moved to Vermont, where she bore their two children, John Crossley Richardson Carter and Julian Berkley Carter. Ramona was a social worker in New Hampshire and Vermont where she met and married her husband Remington in 1977. In 1978, she and her husband moved to Sewanee so she could enroll in the School of Theology of the University of the South. Ordained in 1984, Mother Ramona served churches in Tennessee and Georgia. In 1989, she moved to the island of Guam where her husband had been hired as Academic Vice President of the University of Guam. For six years, Mother Ramona served as vicar of St. John's Church, part of the Micronesian Ministry of the Episcopal Church. Mother Ramona and Remington traveled widely in the Western Pacific, Asia, Africa, South America, England and Canada. In 1998, they returned to Vermont, and then in 2003, moved back to Sewanee, where Remington entered seminary. Ramona offered spiritual direction to seminarians and served several parishes. She is survived by her two children John and Julian (Allen Meyer, grandchildren Sebastian Meyer and Liberty Carter), her husband Remington and his three children Emily Hoffman (Michael Hoffman and grandchildren Madeleine and Mason Hoffman), Amanda Rose (Lotta Smagula), and Barnabas Rose, and by her sister Virginia Harrison. Mother Ramona's funeral will be at 2:00pm Wednesday January 18th 2023 at the Parish of St. Mark and St. Paul, with a reception following. She will be buried at the University Cemetery.
