Obituary of James Ward Turner

James Ward Turner, 91, of Monteagle passed peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on October 25, 2022. He was born on November 22, 1930 in Pelham to the late Ben and Mable Layne Turner. After graduation from high school and service in the Korean War he and his wife, Nell, settled in Ripley, MS where James had a 30 plus year career at the Genesco Shoe Manufacturing Company. After his retirement he and his wife moved back "home" to Monteagle where they lived until their deaths.
An avid fisherman and hunter James enjoyed many hours in the woods and on the rivers and lakes of his native home. He was a longtime member of Morton Memorial United Methodist Church in Monteagle.
Preceding him in death were his parents Ben and Mable Layne Turner, loving wife, Nelvernia Brannan, brothers Frank and Lonnie Turner ,sisters, Elsie Canada, Edna McDaniel, Aileen Sherrill, Fayna Sherrill and Louise Gilliam. James is survived by his sister, Jean Pirtle and brother Floyd Turner of Monteagle; brother in law Jimmy (Jen) Brannan of Ripley, MS and Nina Bynum of Hillsboro, TN. Also surviving are a host of loving nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, October 27 at Cumberland Funeral Home in Monteagle with Reverend Amanda Diamond and Reverend Melissa Derseweh officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 with funeral services at 3:00 and burial to follow at Monteagle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to Morton Memorial United Methodist Church, Music/choir Fund, 322 West Main Street, Monteagle, TN 37356-0650.
