Arlyn Ende Hastings, age 89, died on April 23, 2022, at her Deepwoods Studio home, Sewanee. She was born on October 6, 1932, in New Orleans, to Harry Gerhard Ende, Sr. and Ruth Anderson Ende. She attended Sophie B. Wright High School for Girls in New Orleans, Tulane University, Louisiana State University and The School of the Arts Institute in Chicago. She was a lifelong professional artist and design partner of the late sculptor and author Jack Byron Hastings. A dedicated arts advocate, Arlyn was a founding director of The Orleans Gallery, the first contemporary art gallery in New Orleans (1956); a founding director of The Arts Center of Cannon County, Woodbury, TN; and former Director of the University Art Gallery, The University of the South. Arlyn's brilliant woven coverings for eleven stories of "Elevator Walls" at Vanderbilt University Medical Center have lifted the spirits of many. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Byron Hastings; her parents; brother Harry Gerhard Ende, Jr., and by her son, Mark William Lovett. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Claire Reggio Lovett, Sewanee; her grandson, Curtis William Lovett, Sewanee; stepdaughter, Dorian Hastings and stepson Conrad Stephen Gardner, Talent, OR; nephews Harry Gerhard Ende, III, Fort Lauderdale, FL; Robert (Sandy) Hastings, Valdosta, GA; nieces Melissa Ende Ostrow, Durham, NC; Burna Deane Perry, Tulsa, OK; step grandsons Eli Lindsey, Medford, OR and Dimitri Konis, Talent, OR; Godson, Paul Bartholomew, Tappahannock, VA and her very special private caregiver, Felesha Nunley of Cowan, Tennessee. A celebration of Life will be held on May 7, 2022 from 1:00 P.M.-3:30 P.M. at Cumberland Funeral Home, 207 Mabee Avenue, Monteagle, TN. In lieu of flowers a donation in Arlyn's memory can be made to either; South Cumberland Regional Land Trust-SCRLT.org or to The Arts Center of Cannon County.
