Jean McKee, my cousin, was the big sister that I never had. Eighteen months older, she and her family lived just a mile away. We attended the one room country school attended by our grandmother some 80 years earlier, walking through the snow for the mile from Scotch Ridge to the school. We were in the same 4-H club, showed Milking Shorthorn cattle together as part of the McKee Farms exhibitor team. She gave me the only dance lesson that I ever had so I could go to my first sock hop at Indianola High School. After college, our paths did not cross often but I always felt close and was able to visit Jean and Oliver in Naperville and Monteagle.

I was privileged to work with Jean for several years when she was a 'matron' in Residential Life at the University of the South. She was always cheerful, very efficient, and a positively unique person every way. I was delighted to see her whenever she came into the office where I worked as assistant to the director of Residential Life. We shared many delightful birthday parties and Christmas parties. I loved and admired her and am so sorry she's no longer with us. Still, the memories will always remain.
