Obituary of Marvin Alf Reed

Please share a memory of Marvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marvin Alf Reed August 20, 1952 – February 6, 2021 Marvin Alf “Mac” Reed Sr, 68, of Wilson, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 6th, 2021 surrounded by his family. Mac was born to parents Henry “Minge” Reed, Sr. and Ruth Coleman Reed on August 20th, 1952 in Springhill, Louisiana. Growing up in Mobile, Alabama, he attended Murphy High School. After high school he attended Marion Military Institute where he was an accomplished marksman and captain of the rifle team. He attended the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and where he met the love of his life Catharine Drennon. Mac finished his education at Auburn University with a B.S. in Forestry. Upon graduation he began a 20+ year career with International Paper Company, working in the Woodlands Division in Bastrop, Louisiana and then Wilson. As a Timber Procurement Associate, Mac made many lasting friendships with co-workers and landowners alike. His hard work ethic and quiet yet strong demeanor was respected by many. Later, he shifted his career to the North Carolina Forestry Association where he retired in 2016. As a result of spending most of his adult life outdoors, Mac was an incredible woodsman and his love for the outdoors included hunting and fishing with family and friends. Most important to him was teaching and being involved in these outdoor activities with his two sons. Later in life Mac became an avid golfer and could be found every weekend at Wedgwood Golf Course right in the middle of the action. Be it in the woods, on a boat, or on the golf course countless stories were told and many memories were made that will never be forgotten in the hearts of many. Mac had a servant’s heart and was a devoted father, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to others while asking nothing in return. The proverbial “strong, silent type,” he always led by example, not by talking, and never complaining. He will be missed by many. Mac is survived by his loving and devoted wife of forty-six years, Catharine Drennon Reed; sons, Marvin Alf Reed, Jr of Richmond, Virginia, and Andrew Cleveland Reed and wife, Sara Bowers Reed of Columbia, South Carolina; grandchildren, Drennon Reed, Charlotte Reed, Milly Reed, Drew Reed, and Harriet Reed of Columbia, South Carolina; brother, Henry Minge “Hank” Reed, Jr. of Mobile, Alabama; sister, Marty Reed Crow and husband, Kenny of Mobile, Alabama; brother-in-law, Chuck Drennon and wife, Amy of Memphis, Tennessee; nieces, Louise Crow Oliver of Mobile, Alabama and Missy Marshall of Mobile, Alabama, and his nephews, Kenny Crow III of Mobile, Alabama, Charles Drennon and Weller Drennon both of Memphis, Tennessee. Mac was pre-deceased by his parents. In addition to the final care provided by his devoted wife, the family would like to express thanks to the members of St. Therese Catholic Church for their support in Mac’s final years and would like to express their utmost gratitude to Sister Catherine Okechukwu for her steadfast commitment in providing care and support. A memorial service, honoring his life, will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021 (2PM) at Warren Chapel with Father Polk VanZant officiating. Internment will immediately follow at Monteagle Sunday School Assembly Ground Cemetery. Online memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.cumberlandfuneralhome.net. Arrangements made by Cumberland Funeral Home, 207 Mabee Avenue, Monteagle, Tennessee.
