Obituary of Ernestine P. Hawkins

Dorcas Ernestine Hawkins, age 92, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, formerly of Sewanee, Tennessee passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Born April 30, 1928 to the late Ernest and Dorcas Peyton, “Ernestine” had devoted most of her life to her loving family and career of over forty years. She was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church of Chattanooga and St. Anne’s Chapter of St. Pauls Episcopal Church. Ernestine supported The Boy Scouts of America, and was a member of The Telephone Pioneers of Chattanooga. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, working in her flowers and visiting family and friends in her hometown of Sewanee, Tennessee. She will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, who will be missed dearly. Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, John Ross Hawkins, Sr.; one brother, Charles Peyton; six sisters, Evelyn Louise Peyton, Charlotte Peyton, Mary Diehl, Patricia Hastings, Virginia Peyton and Pauline Ovington; and one grandson, John “Nick” Hawkins. Survivors include one son, John Ross (Nena) Hawkins, Jr.; one brother, John David Peyton; one sister, Ruth Caruthers; three grandchildren, Thomas Ross (Michelle) Hawkins, Shannon (Rob) Batzloff, and Chad (Katelyn) Hawkins; ten great grandchildren; six great- great grandchildren; and several special nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at Eastern Star Cemetery in Sewanee, Tennessee on Monday, April 5, 2021 at 2PM with Father Brad Whitaker officiating. All friends and family are invited to come.
