Obituary of Shirley Jane Harms

Shirley Jane Harms, of Sewanee, died at the age of 101 on Tuesday, January 14, 2020. Shirley was born on September 29, 1918 in Detroit, Michigan to Jesse and Elmer Kundinger of Gross Pointe, Michigan. Shirley graduated from Gross Pointe High School where she met her future husband, Raymond E. Harms. They were married for 30 years. Ray died in Sewanee in 1979. Shirley spent the next 28 years traveling the world with her partner, James Sprague. He died in 2012. Shirley is survived by her two sons, Steve and Andrew; two daughters-in-law, Kati and Marianne; four grandchildren, Jessica, Jeffery, Ethan, and Alexander; and two grandchildren, Carter and Grayson. The family is deeply grateful to Shirley's caregiver, Lois Adams, who is also now family, for her loving spirit and devotion. Shirley referred to Lois as "My Dear Friend". The family is also very grateful for all the love and attention of the nurses of the Sewanee Hospital. They are true angels. Shirley loved the spring, flowers, red birds, and sitting on her porch watching nature. We are grateful to have had her for so many years. She will be deeply missed.
