Obituary of Buford Smiley

Buford Ray Smiley, age 84, of Cynthiana, Ky., passed away on September 9, 2015, at Emerald-Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, TN., after a prolonged battle with cancer. "He fought the good fight and he finished the course". He was born December 30, 1930, to the late Cecil C. and Mildred Florence Smiley in Bourbon Co., KY., and lived most of his life in Harrison Co., KY. He was a Korean War Veteran of the US Air Force, a retired agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and a retired manager for W.T. Young Shipping. He was a devoted member of and Sunday School teacher at Cynthiana Christian Church where he will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha White Smiley, two daughters Deborah Ann Smiley and Dianna Smiley Woods, and three brothers Dr. Harry Smiley, George Smiley, and Cecil Alan Smiley. He is survived by his sister Ruth Smiley Finch, son Dr. Daryll Smiley (wife Jennifer), five granddaughters Jania Smiley Hise, Dara Smiley Lacy, Breanna Woods, Quincy Palmer, and Zara Palmer, eight great-grandchildren Alexandria Hise, Lawson Hise, A.J. Woods, Braxton Stone, Quintana Walker, Will Lacy, Ben Lacy, and Rae'Lee Elizabeth Copeland, one great-great grandson Bentley Ryan Jajo, long time friend and neighbor Helen Morehead, five brothers-in-law, seven sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be officiated by Dr. Larry Bishop and Dr. Tim Teeter at Cynthiana Christian Church on September 26th, 2015, at 11AM. Visitation at the church will begin at the church at 10AM, with burial of cremains in Battle Grove Cemetery afterward. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cynthiana Christian Church or Monteagle First Baptist Church, Monteagle, TN. "Now is laid up for him the reward in glory".
